Why Proton Therapy?
Our Proton Therapy Center is an international center of excellence for proton therapy, research and education.
We are the world’s first proton therapy facility located within a comprehensive cancer center.
Our team continues to expand ways to use proton therapy to benefit patients. Our team pioneered pencil beam proton therapy, also called scanning beam, and intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT). We are one of the few centers worldwide offering these types of proton therapy to our patients. As a result, patients may experience fewer side effects and improved quality of life— during and after treatment.
We have had remarkable success treating tumors of the: brain and skull base cancers, prostate, liver, lung, head and neck, esophagus, breast, gastrointestinal cancers, gynecologic cancers, and central nervous system. We also treat lymphoma, pediatric cancers, sarcomas and other rare tumors.
The image above illustrates how intensity modulated proton therapy "paints" the radiation dose onto the tumor layer by layer.
After going to her local minor emergency room for what she thought would be simple treatment for the flu, a CT scan showed a tumor that would result in thymoma cancer. Watch Aida Deases share her patient experience at the MD Anderson Proton Therapy Center.
